Fact...More than half of the children whose mothers where battered, are likely to be physically abuse themselves.

Fact...In 95% of all domestic violence assaults, crimes are committed by men against women.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - All forms of abuse-physical, psychological, sexual and economic-come from abuser’s need for power and control.

SIGNS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE:

Name calling or put-downs;

bullet

Isolation from family or friends

bullet

Economic control, such as withholding or taking money;

bullet

Actual or threatened physical abuse;

bullet

Destruction of property or;

bullet

Sexual Assault

SYMPTOMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: 

VICTIMS

Irritability, outbursts of anger

bullet

Afraid to tell others what is happening at home

bullet

Feel that is your fault

bullet

Feel that you are wrong and provoked the abuser

bullet

Feel the abuser should be forgiven because they were using alcohol or drugs

bullet

Feel that no one else wants you

EFFECTS ON THE CHILDREN

Children are aware that violence is occurring even if it is not observed. They often experience sleeping, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, fear and guilt. Children that experience violence in the home often act out through aggressive behavior to feel that they have control outside of home.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RISK FACTORS

A family history of violence

As a child you observed your father hit, slap or kick your mother.

A survivor of sexual abuse or incest

bullet

Physically or emotionally abused as a child

bullet

As an adult, you have been hit, slapped or kicked by your partner.

If you are able to identify with any one of these statements, you are at risk for domestic violence.

PHYSICAL

  1. Tension Building. You try not to upset your partner

  2. Violent Episode verbal & physical abuse occur

  3. Honeymoon Phase Your partner apologizes and you believe he will change

HOW YOU CAN STOP

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

 

Call police immediately if you are involved or aware of a battering in progress

Make the commitment to adopt a zero tolerance attitude towards domestic violence in your community.

 

YOU HAVE RIGHTS - BUT ONLY YOU CAN ENFORCE THEM!

There are some legal actions that you can take to help safe guard against violence and abuse.

There is a difference between these two actions. For information call the court numbers listed on the back of this pamphlet. There is a filing fee which in some cases can be waived or modified.

 

SAFETY PLANNING

NEXT TIME...if your partner has hit you once, chances are it will happen again. If you can not leave, be prepared...

Create a safe network of friends you can trust to help you when you are ready

Tell someone to check on your regularly

bullet

Teach your children to call 911

bullet

Keep personal documents in a safe and accessible place in case you need to leave

bullet

Prepare a detailed emergency safety plan for you and your children for leaving home
